One thing you can try is washing the quilt in cold water several times until the excess dye washes out. I’ve had a few surprises with red and pink border fabrics bleeding onto white background fabrics and the cold water wash trick usually works. This also worked on an embroidery piece I made which got a little damp when I was blocking it. I ended up soaking it in cold water in a sink and changed the water every few hours. It took all day but the dye did finally come out. |

One way of keeping wall quilts clean is putting them in the dryer on the air fluff setting (no heat) for 15 minutes. This works best for flat quilts with little or no embellishments on them. Use your discretion for antique quilts and quilts that have embellishments on them, i.e. loose threads, buttons, dimensional work or delicate fabrics and examine how the bits and pieces are attached to see if they will survive the rigors of being tumbled. Sometimes you can baste netting (by hand or with safety pins) over the embellishments to keep them contained and then put the quilt in the dryer. |

Do you have a sewing/quilting/whatever question for us? We are by no means experts, but we do have a lot of practical experience to draw upon and like to think we know a little bit about sewing. Email us your question or comment.
Myra asked us to mention that she would be available for cocktails at pretty much any time, especially if you are a single male, over 35, and can provide transportation (she doesn’t drive much). |
